A recent survey by the University of Michigan found that nearly 40% of college students drink alcohol, while over 20% binge drink once per week or more often, which can lead to long-term negative effects on health and mental wellbeing. In an effort to better understand these statistics, researchers surveyed the drinking habits of over 14,000 college students throughout the United States. Their results were published in the journal Health Psychology, and some of their findings were surprising.
Binge drinking is defined as consuming 5 or more drinks in a short period of time. I’ve found that college students need to understand what binge drinking is, before we can discuss if it’s harmful. A person who binge drinks on a regular basis may experience insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), tension, brain damage, and brain cells getting destroyed. These are just some of reasons why binge drinking should be avoided in college students.
There is a relationship between binge drinking and mental health. While it’s easy to write off students who binge drink as immature, irresponsible party-goers (or even addicts), there are a number of stressors in college that could lead students to abuse alcohol, including exams, relationships with professors or peers, lack of sleep, social pressures like hazing or Greek life and psychological disorders such as anxiety or depression.
Binge drinking is risky for a variety of reasons. In addition to hangovers, it can be associated with drug use, depression, unsafe sex, physical injuries (car accidents), sexual assault, a lack of academic success or performance issues in school or at work due to hangovers.
According to recent statistics, more than 50% of students ages 18-24 have taken part in binge drinking. Some studies suggest that campus culture plays a big role in determining whether or not a student will drink alcohol. Alcohol abuse can take on many forms – most common among college students is binge drinking, which involves consuming 4 or more drinks within 2 hours for men and 3 or more drinks within 2 hours for women.
It’s not just about getting wasted. For many students, heavy drinking is more about bonding with friends than getting high. Whether it’s to celebrate a big exam or just unwind after class, excessive drinking often has less to do with pleasure than stress relief—and it doesn’t help that pressure to succeed is higher than ever before. Today’s college students also lack alcohol education, according to recent research.
It’s a tricky situation when your child is involved in binge drinking. But, there are steps you can take to get them involved in activities that reduce stress levels and help them make good decisions about alcohol consumption.
Because of their age, most college students have not had much experience drinking. As a result, they don’t know what their limits are or how to pace themselves when they’re drinking. The best way to avoid binge drinking is by pacing yourself; start with one drink, wait at least an hour before having another, and make sure you eat while you drink. This will help slow down your consumption rate so that you can better monitor your alcohol intake.
Ultimately, binge drinking is a very serious problem that has major implications on today’s society. It is impossible to ban alcohol. However, more prevention methods are needed to prevent college students from developing problematic drinking habits.
PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is an anxiety disorder often seen in people who have experienced trauma or an overwhelming life event like war. In the military, it’s common to see PTSD show up in soldiers after they return from combat. Especially if they were on the front lines of the fight and saw any combat at all. These symptoms include hypervigilance, anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks—all things that anyone would find hard to live with on a daily basis.
For many soldiers returning from combat, it can be hard to feel like they’re back home. Many find themselves in battles that seem to have no end. The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are real, and they can make life difficult for those who suffer from them. If you think you might be suffering from PTSD, consider talking with a therapist or your doctor about treatment options.
Veterans of combat often suffer from extreme cases of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) which can lead to intense pain, both emotionally and physically. Often these pains are excruciating. Some veterans have found relief through medical marijuana while others have found relief through holistic means such as yoga or meditation. It is important for vets to speak out about their healing processes so that other veterans know that they are not alone in their recovery.
PTSD is not just a military issue. In fact, it affects all sorts of people, including police officers, firefighters, and first responders. What’s more, it can affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. That’s why we need to redefine our understanding of PTSD and make sure that those who are suffering from symptoms get help as soon as possible.
When an individual experiences three or more of these symptoms while in a life-threatening situation, they are considered to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In order for someone to be diagnosed with PTSD, they must experience all of these symptoms. The first criterion is that they experienced or witnessed an event that caused intense fear, helplessness, or horror. This event can be either short (lasting only a few minutes) or long (lasting several days). The second criterion is that within one month after experiencing trauma, there is persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with it. This could include thoughts about what happened; avoiding conversations about it; avoiding activities; places; people who were involved in it; etc.
A great deal of progress has been made in treating mental health issues over the past few decades, but there’s still a lot to be done. Soldiers who are returning from combat and experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often face barriers when seeking treatment.
To all the veterans in need of treatment, do not give up. There is hope. The first step is always the hardest, but once you take it there will be no looking back.
In 2013, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimated that over 20 million Americans aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder in the previous year, including around 2 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 years old. Approximately 68% of this group had an alcohol use disorder and 25% had an illicit drug use disorder in the previous year. Although these figures are alarming, what’s even more troubling is that, according to NSDUH, almost 1 in 4 people aged 12 or older who needed treatment for an illicit drug problem did not receive it at all in 2012.
In 2014, over 11 million Americans used an illicit drug within a 30-day period. Within that same time period, nearly 2 million of those Americans abused prescription drugs. Of these individuals, more than 600,000 were between 12 and 17 years old. More than 10 percent of high school students reported using marijuana in 2015; and more than 7 percent reported using prescription painkillers without medical supervision in their lifetime.
If a teen or young adult is in rehab, they might be getting treatment that helps them overcome substance abuse, but that treatment doesn’t necessarily translate into rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is about more than just overcoming an addiction to drugs and alcohol; it’s about learning how to live without substance abuse altogether.
The best way to deal with substance abuse is to prevent it from happening in the first place. One of those ways is through education and information. If you know what drugs are out there, how they work, and how they affect your body, you’re less likely to try them.
It is critical that we take action to improve our system. The first step in doing so would be to create a national database of minors who have been incarcerated for substance abuse-related crimes, and provide them with treatment upon release.
Educating minors on how to deal with substances is a crucial first step in dealing with substance abuse among young people. By informing them of risks and providing them with education, we can help prevent substance abuse before it starts.
The U.S. is facing a public health crisis as more and more minors are dying from drug overdoses every year. But recovery is possible through inpatient rehab centers that specialize in treating adolescents and young adults.
