The following are among the pets up for adoption at the Humane Society of Madison County.
Jack Jack is a 3.5-year-old cattle dog/blue heeler mix who was brought to the shelter after his previous owners could no longer handle his size. This boy weighs in at around 80 pounds and is your typical cattle dog–has energy and very intelligent. He is reported to be house trained and crate trained, and he loves milk bone treats.
Jack did well on his dog-to-dog testing but was a bit on the bossy side when a smaller dog tried to dominate a fellow playmate. If you know about Jack’s breed, then you know they tend to want to make everyone mind and be polite. He knows how to sit but would love to learn more training in a home environment. Since Jack is of the herding breed, the shelter staff is erring on the side of caution and saying he should not be placed in a home with cats or small animals; he might be prone to chase them. The staff would love for Jack to go to a home that is on the calmer side, since that is what he is used to, with a fenced yard where he can burn off energy before coming inside to take a nap with you.
He would be just fine in a home with kids–he was around kids in his previous home–but calmer, older kids may be best due to his size and breed. The shelter staff would love for this boy to go to owner(s) who have previous experience with a breed of this type. You won’t be disappointed when you meet this loyal, loving boy.
Adoption fees for dogs vary: shelter dogs are $180, prison dogs are $250, puppies are $300, and popular pure-breeds are $400. The price includes: a Home Again microchip, set of shots, deworming, heartworm testing (if old enough), spay or neuter, and a one-year rabies shot (if old enough). All dogs adopted must leave with a county license at an additional cost of $17; this fee is cash only. Adoption fees can be paid by cash or credit card.
Marley Marley is the sweetest 4-year-old kitty cat who was returned to us in the beginning of March 2022 after her previous owner was no longer able to care for her. You will find Marley roaming around our cat adoption room, and when you enter the room, she will rouse and prance up to you, looking for pets an attention. She loves to use her scratch pads and is a very well-behaved kitty. Sometimes she gets scared of sudden, loud noises, but that’s most cats.
The shelter staff feel she would do very well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs with time and slow, proper introductions. So far, she seems to prefer female cats over male cats. With as sweet as she is, the staff also feels she would do well with kids who know how to be respectful to animals and won’t pull her fur or yank her tail. She may be slow to come out of her shell in a new home, but with time and patience, she will become a great addition to a family. Come meet Marley today and give her as many pets and head scratches as your heart desires.
The adoption fee is $80 for kittens up to 6 months old and $60 for cats 7 months and older. It includes: a FeLV/FIV test, spay or neuter, set of shots, deworming, and a one-year rabies shot (if old enough). Fees can be paid by cash or credit card.
